Spikes Five RBI Leads Tribe


Indians outfielder Charlie Spikes (.500, 5 RBI) goes 4-for-4 and drives in five runs to help the Tribe crush Boston at home, 10-3. Duane Kuiper (.286, 3 RBI) scores twice and drives in three runs while Andy Ashby (.286) adds three runs of his own. Pat Dobson (1-0, 3.12 ERA) goes 8.2 innings to gain the win for Cleveland. Luis Tiant (0-1, 9.82 ERA) suffers the loss.

"I just want the world to know that Charlie Spikes is leading the entire league in runs batted in. I may not be leading it next month or next week or even tomorrow - but as of this very day, I am tops in the league." - Cleveland's Charlie Spikes and his league leading five runs batted in.




American League News
Oakland Athletics at Kansas City Royals
Sal Bando (.222, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB) hits a three-run home run and scores three runs, Joe Rudi (.800, 3 RBI) hits a three-run double, while Billy North (.444, 2 SB) has three hits and two stolen bases as the Athletics destroy Kansas City 12-3 in front of 26,770 at Royals Stadium. Tom Poquette (.667) has four hits for KC, but Dennis Leonard (0-1, 40.50 ERA) fails to make it through the second inning, allowing six runs on six hits.

New York Yankees at Milwaukee Brewers
The Yankees score four times off Milwaukee starter Jim Colborn (6.48 ERA) in the top of the ninth, capped by a three-run home run from Graig Nettles (.250, 1 HR, 4 RBI) to sent the game into extra innings. They win the game three innings later as Thurman Munson (.273, 4 RBI) hits a two-run single in the top of the 12th off of Brewers closer Tom Murphy (0-2, 32.40 ERA) to give New York a 9-7 come from behind victory. Roy White (.455) has four hits while Sandy Alomar comes in as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and scores three times for the Yanks. Dock Ellis 1-0, 0.00 ERA) picks up the win in relief.

National League News
Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates
Philadelphia starter Jim Kaat (0.00 ERA) goes 10 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on seven hits but is in the showers by the 14th inning when reliever Ron Schueler (1-0, 0.00 ERA) singles up the middle off of Pirates closer Kent Tekulve (0-1, 13.50 ERA) to score Dick Allen and give the Phillies their second straight win over Pittsburgh. Doc Medich (0.00 ERA) was equally effective for the Pirates - allowing seven hits and an unearned run while striking out seven in nine innings.

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants
The Cincinnati Reds remain winless as Ed Halicki (1-0, 1.13 ERA) allows just three hits and strikes out six in eight innings as the Giants take a 2-1 victory at Candlestick Park. Cesar Geronimo (.571) has two of the four Cincinnati hits, including a single and a triple. Don Gullett (0-1, 3.00 ERA) takes the loss for the Reds.

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets
Mets starter Tom Seaver (2.25 ERA) strikes out 11 batters in eight innings - allowing six hits and two runs, but it takes a walk-off single by Joe Torre in the bottom of the ninth for New York to home with a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Torre (.556, 2 RBI) has four hits on the day - all singles - and John Milner (.625, 1 HR, 1 RBI) hits a solo home run as part of a three hit performance to key the New York offense. Chicago had tied the game in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Jose Cardenal (.444, 2 RBI), who has four hits as well - including a pair of doubles.

St. Louis Cardinals at Montreal Expos
Pete Mackanin (.500, 1 RBI) hits a two out, RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning off of Cardinals closer Al Hrabosky (0-1, 6.75 ERA) to lead Montreal to a 4-3 win at home. Down two in the eighth, Keith Hernandez (.200, 1 HR, 2 RBI) ties the game with a two-run home run down the left field line to help force the extra frames. Bake McBride (.400, 1 HR, 1 RBI) also homers for the Cards other run.
