Minor League Signings and Trade Announced
12/5/13: We are very happy to announce the signings of 19 year old SS Luis Enrique Acosta, 17 year old 3B Alberto Sanchez, and 20 year old 2B Miguel Dilone all to minor league contracts. Sanchez and Acosta will join single A West Virginia Power while Dilone will start the year with AA Altoona Curve.
I received a call from Brian Cashman early this morning. We had all ready discussed before that Nova for McKenry straight up was not going to happen and that he would like a prospect specifically a middle infielder. We have 3 shortstops in our organization with good skills but Cashman wanted our top SS prospect Alen Hanson and he wouldn't budge. So it worked out well that we are confirming the signing of Acosta today and really eased the pain of letting Hansen go. The trade will be officially announced later in the day. Michael McKenry is going to step right in and be the starting catcher in New York and bat 8th while Hanson will be playing for the AA Trenton Thunder as he continues to develop. Ivan Nova will be taking a spot in our rotation and we will determine where that spot will be this spring.
All in all it was a very productive day and has gotten the ball rolling for us as we filled our top need and now can move on down the list.
News from around the league:
The Yankees are having a busy day themselves as they announced the signing of Shin-Soo Choo to a 2 year contract at 10.2 mil. per year. Choo had 464 at bats for the Reds in 2013 posting a batting line of .246/.331/.386 with 14 HR 48 RBI 75 RS and 11 SB. Choo will be playing all around the outfield for the Yanks and will take over the #3 spot in their batting order.
The San Francisco Giants have announced the signing of 35 year old middle reliever Grant Balfour to a 2 year contract totaling $9.6 mil. Balfour posted solid numbers for the Athletics in 2013 pitching 46.1 innings with a 2.85 ERA. He did have a little trouble with his control though as he yielded 24 walks. The Giants plan to use Balfour primarily as a right handed setup man for closer Sergio Romo.
