We took a step back this month as we finished with a record of 11-15. Although considering that we lost 2 of our best players for extended time before the month even began (Francisco Liriano May 23rd strained triceps out 8-9 weeks, May 31st Andrew McCutchen sprained ankle out 3 weeks) we didn't have much of a chance to begin with.
For the most part the staff did pretty well in shouldering the loss of Liriano, although Charlie Morton didn't fair well as he posted a 5.79 ERA in the 5 starts he made after being recalled from AAA Indianapolis.
Mark Melancon seemed to be headed in the right direction as he recorded 5 saves and posted an ERA of 3.95. The biggest surprise out of the bullpen though was 41 year old Jose Contreras who posted an ERA of 1.26 in 14 IP.
Pedro Alvarez again powered the offense with 6 HR however he also batted .154 for the month. This is a concern as Pedro is young player we are counting on to develop into at least a .250 hitter to go along with that solid power. The biggest surprise of the month on the offensive side was Gaby Sanchez as he broke out for 30 hits in the month posting a .357 BA .427 OBP to go with 5 HR. On the downside Starling Marte regressed to a .198 BA and a .270 OBP for the month. This is another young player were counting on and we simply cant have our lead off hitter with an OBP below .300
The 2013 draft was conducted on June 6th. The Pirates took 19 year old right fielder Avery Decker with the 13th overall pick. Our head scout Greg Smith sees him as having 4 star potential. He projects him to be a .270 hitter with decent power and a good eye. Other top picks:
2nd Rd. Jordan Sheffield Age 18 SP 1/2* pot.
3rd Rd. Tarasios Calpis Age 19 SP 1/2* pot.
4th Rd. Nick Lewis Age 21 2B 4* pot.
5th Rd. Steve Corrigan Age 23 CF 1* Pot.
Not exactly an overwhelmingly good draft however, I do see a couple of guys who could be contributing here in a couple of years.
