Last Week (7-0): 3-0 vs. MIL, 4-0 vs. LAD

  • 8/4: MIL 1, PIT 2 - Burnett's stuff was superb today as he worked 8 innings allowing 1 ER and striking out 9. He also supplied a triple in the 3rd that he would score on. Marinez would get the last out of the 9th to earn his 6th save of the season.
  • 8/5: MIL 0, PIT 3 - Liriano earned his 14th win of the season with a great start (7 IP 0 ER). Brandon Crawford led the offense going 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBI. Herrera worked the 9th inning for his 12th save of the season.
  • 8/6: MIL 1, PIT 3 - Castro pitched well (7 IP 0 ER) earning his 9th win. Marte added to the victory going 1-3 with an RBI, RS and a SB as Marinez worked the 9th for his 7th save of the season.
  • 8/7: LAD 3, PIT 4 - Wandy put together a quality start (6 IP 2 ER) to earn his 7th win of the season. A single by Alvarez and a sac fly from Lowrie put us ahead in the 6th. Marinez recorded the final 2 outs for his 7th save.
  • 8/8: LAD 2, PIT 3 - Lincecum was stellar (7 IP 1 ER) but Herrera would give up the lead in the 8th on a solo HR by Matt Kemp. Innoue shut them down the rest of the way until Mr. Clutch Jed Lowrie hit a walk off RBI single with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th.
  • 8/9: LAD 1, PIT 2 - It was a pitcher's duel between Burnett (7.1 IP 1 ER) and Capuano (6 IP 0 ER) that would eventually lead to a battle of the bullpens which we would win as Alvarez hit a walk off solo shot off of Rex Brothers with 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th.
  • 8/10:LAD 1, PIT 8 - Liriano earned his 15th win of the season with a solid start (7.1 IP 1 ER) and we beat up the Dodgers staff with 8 runs on 9 hits. Brandon Crawford broke the game open with a 3 run HR in the 3rd after coming in for Neil walker who left the game in the 2nd after being hit by a pitch.
  • Neil Walker was diagnosed with a fractured finger and will be out for 5 weeks. Ryan Roberts was recalled from AAA Indianapolis.
We have certainly been on a roll and are not far off of completing the first goal on my list. We are starting to get some recognition from the fans as the city of Pittsburgh is buzzing with the thought that we can put up our first winning season in 22 years. But we are thinking beyond that as well. With a 9.5 game lead in the middle of August we feel pretty comfortable and if we can maintain that through the month we'll use the expanded roster to our benefit and give the regulars some rest as we head into the postseason. The loss of our leadoff hitter Neil Walker is eased by the fact that Brandon Crawford has been so hot and we have a better defensive team with Crawford on the field.

With that said I'd like to list a few of the key acquisitions that I have made since taking over the team in October of 2013:

SS Brandon Crawford: .351/.427/.619 5 HR 14 RBI 15 RS (Acquired in trade that sent Ivan Nova to San Francisco)
1B Brett Wallace: .380/.434/.612 6 HR 19 RBI 25 RS (Acquired in trade that sent James McDonald to Houston)
SS Jed Lowrie: .256/.334/.432 15 HR 61 RBI 47 RS (Acqired in trade that sent Brandon McCarthy to White Sox)
C Austin Romine: .288/.338/.525 3 HR 11 RBI 8 RS (Signed as free agent)

SP A.J. Burnett: 6-0 71.1 IP 2.14 ERA 65 K's 1.09 WHIP (Signed as free agent)
SP Simon Castro: 9-3 117 IP 3.77 ERA 102 K's 1.19 WHIP (Signed as free agent)
SP Tim Lincecum: 6-8 139 IP 4.14 ERA 136 K's 1.47 WHIP (Signed as free agent)

CL Jhan Marinez: 8 SV 22.1 IP 0.40 ERA 22 K's 0.86 WHIP (Signed as free agent)
SU Iwane Innoue: 3 SV 72.2 IP 2.11 ERA 60 K's 1.07 WHIP (Signed as international free agent)
SU Daniel Ray Herrera: 12 SV 50.1 IP 2.68 ERA 39 K's 1.31 WHIP (Taken in the rule 5 draft)

And now with that said I'd like to make note of a terrible trade I made:

Alen Hansen (.269/.309/.491 13 HR 39 RBI 41 RS) and Michael McKenry (.286/.352/.498 17 HR 63 RBI 44 RS) to the Yankees for Ivan Nova (1-2 5.40 ERA 43.1 IP)

But ya win some ya lose some and so far the majority of the moves that I have made are paying huge dividends and I have to say I'm a little surprised but I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Who's Hot: A.J. Burnett 1-0 15.2 IP 1 ER 15 K's, Tim Lincecum 0-1 14.2 IP 3 ER 16 K's, Jhan Marinez 3 SV 3 IP 0 ER 3 K's, Francisco Liriano 2-0 14.1 IP 1 ER 13 K's.
Who's Not: Starling Marte 2-21 6 K's

Next Week: 3 @ PHI, 3 @ CHC

News from around the league:

8/10: Chris Herrman (TEX) will be out for 9 months with a torn posterior cruciate ligament.

AL Player of the Week: Mike Morse (SEA) 12-25 5 HR 8 RBI 8 RS
NL Player of the Week: Bryce Harper (WAS) 11-26 2 HR 6 RBI 5 RS
