The Chicago White Stockings have fired manager Jimmy Wood. Wood's replacement is a surprising choice; unknown 37 year old Taiwanese manager Tze-meng Goei.

Chicago is currently on a 9 game losing streak and are in last place in the National League at 8-12. Less than two months ago Chicago were at 8-3 and leading the NL by 2.5 games. The White Stockings have not won a game since losing third baseman Levi Meyerle to injury in June.

Chicago's Levi Meyerle could be out for the rest of the season with a broken hand. Meyerle has been one of the leagues best players this season. He currently leads the league in batting average (.564), on-base percentage (.586), hits (31), and home runs (3). Meyerle's play has helped the Chicago White Stockings to top spot in the National League. Now many will be watching to see if Chicago can cope with the loss of their star player and continue on their winning ways....

Historical Fiction #4: April-May 1871

On April 1, 1871 at Cleveland's National Association Grounds the first game of the first major league baseball season was played between American League teams Baltimore Canaries and Cleveland Forest Citys. Baltimore won the game 5-2. The player of the game was Baltimore pitcher Dick McBride who pitched a complete game and allowed just 6 hits and 1 earned run.
