The Roots
Long after the New York Kickerbocker Base Ball Club devised its rules in 1846 the game of baseball spread like wildfire throughout the New York City area. In 1855 the Atlantic Base Ball Club of Brooklyn formed and began play of the Knickerbocker rules of base ball.

The club began actively practicing and in 1856 another club the Eckford Base Ball Club of Brooklyn forms and challenged the Atlantics to a game on August 23rd under the Knickerbocker rules to commemorate the Battle of Long Island also known as the Battle of Brooklyn or Brooklyn Heights on August 27, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War.

At Union Grounds on August 23rd it was a hard fought contest but the Atlantics managed to come away with a 6-5 victory over their new rivals. The second contest at Union Grounds on August 30th home to the Atlantics saw the Atlantics win again in a tight 8-7 contest.
