August 3, 1871

The Chicago White Stockings have fired manager Jimmy Wood. Wood's replacement is a surprising choice; unknown 37 year old Taiwanese manager Tze-meng Goei.

Chicago is currently on a 9 game losing streak and are in last place in the National League at 8-12. Less than two months ago Chicago were at 8-3 and leading the NL by 2.5 games. The White Stockings have not won a game since losing third baseman Levi Meyerle to injury in June.

September 1, 1871

In the American League the Cleveland Forest Citys and Baltimore Canaries remain on top with both teams at 14-10. Philadelphia Athletics are three games back at 11-13 and the St. Louis Brown Stockings fourth at 9-15.

In the National League the Cincinnati Reds are in first place at 14-10 just one game ahead of the Boston Red Stockings. Boston were 3-1 in August and are 13-11 overall. Brooklyn Atlantics are third at 11-13. The Chicago White Stockings have ended their losing streak and are now 10-14 on the season.

August was a tough month for the Brooklyn Atlantics with five games on the road. We split games with league leaders Cincinnati before losing three in Boston to be 1-4 on the month. At three games back we're not out of it, but with just six games remaining in the regular season we can't afford to lose too many more. We finish the regular season with three games in Chicago before playing three at home against Cincinnati.

Our best offensive player in August was second baseman John Hatfield. John hit 8 of 24 and his 8 hits included a home run, three triples, and a double. He batted in 5 runs and scored 3 of his own. On our pitching staff relieve George Zettlein had a great month with 1 save and a 0.79 ERA over his 11.1 innings pitched. Art Allison's hitting streak ended at a record 19 games and Cap Anson's streak ended at 14.
