1892 was the first year following the demise of the National League, and the first year with two separate leagues. In the newly formed Eastern League the Buffalo Bisons, one of the original Players League teams finished with a 86-64 record, and beat out the Philadelphia Athletics by 3 games.
The Bisons offense was led by Hitter of the Year Jesse Burkett who hit .298, swiped 64 bases, and scored 105 runs. Joining Burkett in the lineup was a young duo of Bill Dahlen (.303, 10 HR, 78 RBI) and Willie Keeler (.316, 90 R, 100 RBI).
While Buffalo didn't have dominant pitching, the trio of Al Atkinson (28-21, 2.24 ERA), Doug Dickson (26-10, 2.64), and Sadie McMahon (18-20, 3.11) was able to hold their own.
The Bisons entered the World Series as the underdogs against the Chicago Pirates (92-58), but the Bisons had no trouble winning 4 of 5 to capture their first World Series championship.
