APRIL 15,
AFTER A 4-GAME SPLIT WITH FLORIDA, WE JUMPED ON A LATE NIGHT FLIGHT AND HEADED TO PITTSBURGH FOR A FRIDAY THRU SUNDAY SERIES. AT 6-4 ON THE SEASON, I FALL TO SLEEP QUITE EASILY ON THE PLANE.

AS THE PHONE CONTINUES TO VIBRATE, I FINALLY REALIZE WHAT IS GOING ON AND REACH IN MY POCKET AND ANSWER THE PHONE………IT WAS BRYAN GRIFFIN, THE MANAGER FOR OUR SINGLE A TEAM IN DAYTON.

GRIFFIN: HEY ANDY, GOT SOME TOUGH NEWS TONIGHT…. I THINK WE JUST LOST HORST FOR THE SEASON.

NORTH: WHAT HAPPENED?

GRIFFIN: DOC SAID HE BLEW HIS ELBOW, TORN ELBOW LIGAMENT. IM THINKING WE WILL MOVE DANIEL GUERRERO INTO THE ROTATION. HE HAS PITCHED WELL IN 4 GAMES IN RELIEF AND I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE HIM A SHOT AT STARTING.

AS I HUNG UP THE PHONE I COULD ONLY THINK ABOUT HOW I HAD SEEN JEREMY HORST, A 6 FT, 3 INCH PITCHER WHO HAD A DECENT FASTBALL IN THE LOW 90’S. I LOOKED AT MY STAT SHEET ON HIM AND NOTICE HE HAD A 5.63 ERA IN DAYTON IN 2 STARTS BUT HAD STRUCK OUT 9 IN 8 INNINGS.

I SHUT MY EYES AND AGAIN FELL A SLEEP. THE LAST THING I REMEMBER BEFORE I FALL TO SLEEP IS THE PIRATES. THEY WILL BE WITHOUT A COUPLE OF OUTFIELDERS, RYAN CHURCH AND LASTINGS MILLEDGE WITH INJURIES OF THEIR OWN.
