The new 1954 Baltimore Orioles are really the 54th season of a franchise founded as the Milwaukee Brewers in 1901, then played as the St. Louis Browns from 1902 - 1953. Now another chapter begins in Baltimore with the Orioles. Jerrold Hoffberger and Clarence Miles are the majority owners who run the organization. Miles joined forces with Baltimore Mayor Tommy D'Alessandro in 1952 to try to bring a team to Baltimore when the opportunity presented itself to buy the majority interest from Bill Veeck the majority owner of the St Louis Browns. Hoffberger is a lifelong resident of Baltimore and major shareholder and Chairman of the National Brewing Company. Using Hoffberger's influence with the Washington Senators so that they would vote for Baltimore the Senators would be selling beer from Hoffberger's company under very liberal prices. So then through the efforts of both men the Baltimore Orioles are born and will enter 1954 as their first season of existence in Baltimore.
Next they began to search for a General Manager to take the reins in running the baseball operations and so after an exhaustive search they've settled on young Greg Masceri to run things. When it was suggested to Masceri that the Orioles were in sad shape top to bottom and even their farm system he replied " If your trying to tell me that we got problems, just look around baseball and tell me who doesn't ! " He went on to say that he realized the challenge was a great one and the rebuild would be a multi year project.
Jimmy Dykes is a veteran Manager who came from the Philadelphia Athletics to take the helm of the Orioles. He's had a long career having spent 13 years with the Whitesox and the past 3 years with the Athletics without any great success. His style of management is that of a micro manager who wants to control every aspect of the game. He's also a disciplinarian which can rub certain veterans the wrong way. Masceri has great faith and has turned up the heat on Dykes to deliver a .500 club this year.
Masceri has his work cut out for him as the farm system is in about the same bad shape that the new Baltimore Orioles are in. The AAA farm club is the Vancouver Mounties who finished in 8th place last year. The AA farm club is the San Antonio Missions who finished in 7th place last year. If Dykes can deliver in Baltimore then Masceri can concentrate o building up the farm system.
We'll have to see how Dykes dedication to detail and strict disciplne works here in Baltimore.
