So, Oakland traded Miguel Sano to the San Deigo Padres following the 84 season. Sano now finds himself backing up Taffy Wright in RF and Brooks Robinson at 3B. His 20 rating as SS no longer exists. Too funny. I remember when I first started moping about the out of position stuff, I asked if players would lose their ability to play a new position when recalc took place. Was told, no, the game was now set so players would retain their new postion ratings. LOL. Yup that happens.

Now, however, you can set it up to also show the player's POT ratings around the field, which I think is super cool and really helpful given I like lots of defensive flexibility in my squads. EG, my Seattle Pilots in that save: ![]() You might have always been able to do this, but no doubt the new experienced-based ratings have made it a heck of a lot different. New bad-boy 27-inch monitor doesn't hurt, either...

This guy is one of the things I'm really liking about 24 random debut. In real life he started 14 games, going 2-4 4.39. Love stuff like this.

Wondering if I'm the only random debut player that gets a huge kick out of seeing what pitchers the AI decides to turn into closers. One of my many loves when it comes to random debut.
Oh and Kent Tekulve is in my current random debut. Was surprised to see his new facegen. His old facegen used to scare the crap out of me. |

Just got back from a short vacation. A week without OOTP, can that be considered a vacation
![]() Meanwhile, Benny Ayala surprised the world with a 47 home run season in 1985. Will be interesting to see how he follows that up in 1986. Cal Ripken in his rookie season tied Ayala for the home run title in the NL with 47. In the AL, another rookie Ron Santo blasted his way to the home run title with I want to say 41(at work). Santo also hit in the .340's and won a batting title. |

Playing out 1986 right now. Started the league in 1982 and I've been letting the game import the historical modifiers each year. Trying to decide if I want to proceed with this method into 1987. 87 is such a oddball season home run wise. I would not be surprised at all if someone were to break the 61 mark if I do.

The Miguel Sano saga continues. Watching this guy from year to year is so bizarre. Sano made it back into the starting lineup in 1986, playing mainly in RF for the San Diego Padres. Sano started 79 games in RF, 13 at 1B and 8 at 3B in 1986. Take a look at Sano's numbers at the plate. Dude has a 177 OPS+ Miguel has a career 1.001 OPS.
1987 rolls around. Sano is now being platooned at 1B with Emmanuel Rivera. Sano lost his ratings to play RF in the off season. Recalc is not this guys friend when it comes to fielding. Learns to play SS, be it badly, but forgets how during the offseason. Plays error free ball in RF over 81 games in 1986, grant it with a less than stellar zr, but forgets how to play RF during the offseason. Guy needs to be a designated hitter. |

Only in his third season, but Ron Santo appears to be on a OOTP mission to make sure no one questions his whether he is hall of fame worthy in OOTPland. Santo won a triple crown in his rookie year which of course led to a league MVP award as well. In his second season his average dropped to .312, but he continued to drive in runs at monster clip. He's currently hitting .380+ in June of his his 3rd big league season and once again he is driving in runs. Santo hits 3rd for the Seattle Mariners, right in front of Trevor Story who is also an rbi machine. The Mariners have been to the post season multiple times and finally won a World Series in 1986. They are once again right in the thick of thing in 87 trailing the White Sox by a 1/2 game.
Cal Ripken, like Santo is also in his 3rd season in the bigs. Ripken stars for the St Louis Cardinals. Ripken hit 47 bombs in 1985, followed that up with 45 in 86 and currently has 18 in June of 87. Addie Joss looks like he may be the first pitcher to reach the century mark for wins. Joss currently sits at 88. The above screenshotted Rich Wilkens is right behind Joss and Rube Waddell is right behind Wilkens. Waddell and Joss are division rivals with Waddell pitching for the San Diego Padres and Joss for the Los Angeles Dodgers. I'm really loving this years version of random debut, but I'm still worried the complaints are coming in regards to how fringe type players are having successful careers. After 6 seasons, Mandy Brooks is one of my leagues top home run guys. Brooks in real life played 116 games back in 1925/26. He hit 15 home runs total, but he did hit 14 over 349 at bats in 1925. Brooks success in my random is a huge surprise and is a great storyline. Wilkens being among the wins leaders is another surprise. Benny Ayala hit 47 home runs back in 1985 and followed that up with a 20+ bomb season in 86. He's hitting them at a solid clip in 87 as well. Thing is, I'm also seeing great performances by great players as well. Rod Carew has won multiple batting titles and has a career batting average in the .340 range after 5 and 1/2 seasons. In the past few years it was common for Carew to hit for a lower average as the leagues were in my opinion too stacked with superstars. Last edited by David Watts; 05-08-2023 at 10:12 AM. |

Earlier in this thread I posted a screenshot of Mark Fidrych, displaying his first two seasons(1982/83) and how well he was doing. Well The Bird would pitch 2 more seasons before the recalc gods crushed him. By 1986 he found himself riding the reserve roster train for the Chicago White Sox and is doing the same in 87. It was still great to see him have those 4 seasons in the bigs. Definitely the best luck I've ever had with him.

Your mention of Fydrich reminded me that Vida Blue passed away today. RIP.
