Not enough skaters...

I'm playing as a GM in challenge mode, so keep in mind I can't change some options. With three centers suspended, my coach is putting a defensive player at center on the 4th line. This triggers an unhelpful message: "You need to dress 12 forwards and 6 defensemen. If you have a forward in a defenseman's spot or vice-versa, you may need to change his position via the right-click menu."

My total player numbers are correct, but I signed more free agents just in case. This didn't fix the problem—if anything, it made things worse because some new players are unpopular. When I use the AI assistant, it keeps putting the same defensive player at center on my 4th line, and I can't right-click to change his position. At most, I can only clear all lines, but the assistant reverts to the same setup.

I have screenshots but can't figure out how to attach them to this post without a URL. It's super frustrating because I'm years into this save. In past years you could edit the save file to unlock the problem but I can't seem to find any info on the topic. Help!

Are you right clicking on him from the main Roster menu? As far as I am aware Challenge Mode doesn't negate the ability to select a new position for a player from that right click action menu
