August 28 1982. Babe is up to 54 home runs on the season. His pace is right at the 72 the preseason predictions predicted. His White Sox simply can't gain any ground on the first place Minnesota Twins, remining 6 game back in the standings. The Sox are 2 games up on the the 3rd place Yankees, so they're currently in place to get the wildcard, but I'm sure they would love to have 1st place and the 1 game advantage that brings in the League Championship Series.
The NL race is a lot closer, as the Pirates lead over the Cardinals is just 2 1/2 games. The Phillies have hit the skids and have fallen under .500 on the season. Meanwhile, the Houston Astros have taken over 3rd place in the NL. The Cardinals Zack Gelof is one home run away from establishing baseball's 30-30 club.
