Your example didn't show in your post. That happens when the < and > are kept at the beginning and ending of each line.

Add a space between the < and the next character at the front of the line, and a space between the last character before the ending > and the line will show up properly.

Annoying, I know. I ran into this problem myself awhile back when I was trying to post lines copied directly out of a schedule file.
